Property Service Workers

Our mission is to develop quality education and training programs that raise standards for property service work.

We do that by preparing workers in the industry to lead, together with our partners, for cleaner, greener, safer, and more inclusive workplaces.

An Overview of Our Programs

The programming offered to Property Service Workers is customized specifically to the needs of these workers. With a presence in Washington, Oregon, Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota, Michigan, and Ohio, our offerings are continually being refined based on the ongoing and expanding needs of workers. Our primary current programs include our Green Janitor Health Certification Program and our Sexual Harassment Prevention Training.

"With the Green Janitor course we can now help with the environment and save energy so that the whole building is greener, because we are the "eyes and ears" of the building, that is, we go through the whole building daily and look and we listen to all the things that can be improved."

-Magda Astudillo, ABM, Colorado

Green Janitor Health Certification Program

The SEIU Education and Support Fund has partnered with Building Skills Partnership and SEIU local unions to expand the groundbreaking Green Janitor program. The program offers a certification for janitors from the U.S. Green Building Council-Los Angeles with a curriculum addressing energy and water efficiency, waste management, and worker health and safety. We've completed pilot courses in Portland, Denver, Chicago, Cleveland, and Minneapolis.

Keep IT CLEAN, GREEN & SAFE

Property Service Workers clean and disinfect our built environment including residential and office buildings, as well as public spaces like airports and retail establishments. These workers are primarily people of color, immigrants and women. Their work is often low-paid, contingent and insecure. ESF's unique partnership with SEIU ensures that janitors' voices are centered in program design to improve industry standards.

“I was so glad to be able to learn about green cleaning in this training. Not only because I am a janitor, but because I, my family and my community have the right to live healthier. And I know I have to take care of the environment where we live.”

- Sergio Gamero, Able Services, Oregon

A Closer Look: The Green Janitor Health Certification Program

Janitors in multiple cities seek to expand the ground-breaking Green Janitor program as part of their effort to build respect for their work and be part of the response to the climate crisis. The 30 hour course offers a certification for janitors from the U.S. Green Building Council- Los Angeles with a curriculum addressing energy and water efficiency, waste management, green cleaning, and worker health and safety. A study from SEED-LA indicates that buildings where janitors go through the course average a 5.6% reduction in building energy usage.

Sustainability: How Building Owners Benefit

Building owners benefit in supporting expansion of Green Janitor programs through reduced energy and water costs, as well as empowering janitors to participate in the goals of the LEED rating system.

Sexual Harassment Prevention Training

Sexual harassment and assault are all too common in the janitorial industry, which relies on primarily female and immigrant workers.  ESF partnered with SEIU Local 49 to develop a 2 hour training course for Oregon janitors that meets State of Oregon mandates and is designed to educate, train, and empower workers to identify and respond to sexual harassment and assault. Since launching the program in 2023, hundreds of janitors have attended this course, helping responsible companies comply with the law, empower vulnerable low wage workers, and respond to a critical community need.

Additionally, ESF serves as the third party administrator for the SEIU Leadership Training and Education Fund (SEIU LTEF), a joint labor-management training fund created by janitorial contractors and SEIU local unions to raise standards for this critical work.
