Apprenticeship Evaluation Released

We are excited to share with you a recent study - Strengthening the Knowledge, Skills, and Professional Identity of Early Educators, The Impact of the CA SEIU Early Educator Apprenticeship Program - from the Center for the Study of Child Care Employment.

From 2016 to 2019, the SEIU Education and Support Fund (ESF) in partnership with SEIU Locals 1021, 521, and 99 as well as the YMCA of East Bay, Mexican American Opportunity Council, Los Angeles Trade Technical College and others, created and implemented three unique apprenticeships and on-the-job learning programs for family child care providers and center-based early educators.

We're excited to be able to share with you all that we accomplished and learned through this project.

Some key highlights:

  • Nearly every apprentice who responded to the survey reported that the program helped increase their understanding of child development.

  • A total 276 educators participated in the program. Twenty completed their Bachelor’s degrees, 12 completed their AA and 172 received a California ECE teacher permit.

  • Apprentices credited the program with enhancing their quality of care and instruction, as well as their confidence as providers.
